Hello to our loveable blobs! We feel that it is our duty to inform you of a slight error in the blob. Although the text last time did not indicate who was writing the blob, be assured that you can assume it was both Thomas and Michelle. Actually, whatever the text is I think that you can assume it is a joint effort of writing. thank you so much for being so understanding, we would be lost without all of you, you are so so kind, and we so much love your comments, ohhh, this is sounding more and more sarcastic, but in reality, we love you all very much! Sorry, or in Thai, so solly, we wir stalt brobbing naw......MORE BLOBBING!!!!
leave to school before our host mom at 8
Here is a more accurate schedule:
Wake up at about 7 am because the dogs come into our hut and bark and jump and growl and lick and be dogs at us. Had we mentioned the dogs before? if not there are six very energetic puppies and one mom. They like to play when we like to sleep....lot's of fun! ahahaha. This is really just a picture to show the dogs...Michelle was already awake when it was taken.
Breakfast at around 8:10. We really wish we had some pitures of our breakfast, but instead we'll just tell you about it. We always eat rice, which is great! We also always eat cucumbers, which is OK, and we always eat dried minnows, which is not so great! Breakfast sure is an adventure!
We get to school by about 8:45 and suprivise the last half of the flag raising ceremony (a photo can be seen in our last blog entry), and the above photo is of our transportation. Thomas really enjoys driving to work on a scooter, despite the chance of death!
At 9 we begin our first class of grades three and four. They greet us altogether every morning, of course very monotone like most memorised things that you don't really understand are, "Goodmorning Khon kru Toe-Mass and Khon kru Mich-ch-elle." we say "Goodmorning!" they say "How awe you today?" we, "I'm good...I'm great! And you?" they, "am fine tankyou. and y--oh no hehehehe" we, "okay, you can sit down."
Actually, each class that we teach begins the lesson with the same memorized greeting, that has no meaning. So what we have been trying to o now at the beginning of every lesson is ask each of them how they are doing, and get them to use other words other than "am fine, tankyou." It's working out quite well with our grades five and six, but the younger ones either aren't quite understading, or are just a bit more shy. But we all have fun with it when we make the emotions faces to show the different feelings.
10 am is grades five six. This class has many very bright students that are loving the english that they are learning. It is a lot of fun to teach them.
Some days we teach preschool which is really just numbers, ABC's, colours, basic things....and they are very sweet. They have a lot of energy and like to play and repeat back at the top of their lungs.
Then 1pm is the evil grade one and two's. this is a very challenging class. We think of things that we think they will enjoy for lessons, and they do for part of the class and then they just get bored and decide to be crazy devil children.
In between and after all of the classes that we do, we do alot of playing and just fun with the children. After class there is as much learning as in class, and we learn thai from the students then as well. Many of the girls like to play volleyball so Thomas has a lot of fun playing with them.
Lastly, we always eat supper after eight pm. This is no problem for us, but we do really appreciate our Thai mom's seventeen year old son, who does ALL the cooking, cleaning and household chores...He is a really great guy...and Michelle is in love with him.
Anyways, we must go now, sorry for the lack of photos...It is very hard to put photos on, it takes approximately ten minutes for each one, and it does not always work! We will try for more next time! We hope to hear from all of you...Comments mean you love us! We were thinking of creating a communal blog account so that more of you can comment, and then post the username and password on the blog itself, would anyone care to do this? If so, go right ahead, and post it in the blog comments! We love and miss you all!
Thomamas and Michelley
Sounds like you're having a lot of fun out there! Too bad the photos take so long to upload but I'm sure we all understand having better things to do than wait around for a couple pictures!
ReplyDeleteawesome guys;
ReplyDeleteit sounds like you will be experts soon in the art/science of teaching. how much longer are you there for? then where to? all is well here the temperatures have mellowed and we are into some quite excellent days now. the sun is actually up between 8 and 8:30 am now and gets really quite warm in the middle of the day.
seanna and i are off to vancouver in a weeks time to visit her mom and friends. we are hoping that it is a prelude to spring in saskatchewan and will cut up the winter months.our dogs will accompany us on our trip. it looks like the dog visitors you have are very young and well cared for relative to the thai dogs that i remember. in fact one traveller made a calender of mangy unhealthy dogs when i was travelling.
great to hear of you and i'm sure even the grade 1's and 2's love you as teachers.
cheers

Dear Thomas and Michelle and everyone else,
ReplyDeleteThe pictures are worth every minute it takes you to download them. Thanks ALOT for doing that. When that first picture of you popped up in this last entry I miss you and am so glad to see you... and I look at the pictures so often that for every ten minutes you spend downloading I probably spend 30 minutes looking back at each picture over the week... and thats just me... and there are lots of folks who are following your blog...
A little question for David... are you David Warkentein?
And a little question for Cornelius Clorbs... have you seen my cell phone anywhere? I got a new one two weeks ago and it has been missing for a week. If you see it anywhere on the yard...
And Betty... how was the toboganning on the weekend?
And Mom and Dad (Irvin and Donna)... I saw Audrey in Safeway yesterday and she (like us) was glad to get an e-mail from you... how is the cruise going?
Does anyone have any fantastic Thai recipes... without minnos or fish heads? I'd like to do some Thai cooking!
สวัสดีค่ะ (sawat di kha)
Love,
Lynne
Hi,
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your efforts to make sure we get a little view of your time over there! we love it!
This trip seems such a great experience for the two of you! I can imagine how you connect with those kids, even in another language. Klaas still remembers the tricks you showed him; you communicated so well...even without knowing the flemish words!
We are doing fine, enjoying the snow (it's a big thing in Belgium: the third time it snows this year!!). Klaas is getting nervous for his birthday next week, Kris is renovating the house we bought, Merel is singing the "Terry-song" every day. It still feels like you're close by...and that's a good feeling.
Anyway, enjoy all those new experiences, the kids, the bike rides, the dogs, the company, the flavors, the free time,...
Take care!!
Sandra
HI!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the pictures and like Lynne, I am soooo grateful for them.....especially the one of the two of you that "wercomes" us to the blog!! You guys are too funny!!
Your first article for the Porcupine Ink Newspaper was published this week. It is an excellant article and there are many who have already commented on how great it is to have a glimpse into life in Thailand, through your stories. You, now, have another realm of a 'following' that you must keep in the loop of your adventurous life....I hope it doesn't feel like a burden to you because it feels like a gift to all of us!! Once again thanks for priorizing time to update the blog, phone and email/ it means the world to us!!
I'll email more later. I love you and I am looking forward to hopefully having a phone visit this weekend!!
Love, Mom ( Betty )
Hey everybody! Thom called this morning! They have a long weekend away from school and are staying at mutnee guest house in Nong Khai. If you google it you will see a really beautiful place and its great to imagine them there on the Mekong river.
ReplyDeleteThey sound sonderful! Their students write them little love notes and draw pictures for them... they are loved!
Love,
Lynne
i'm pretty sure that i stayed at the mut mee guesthouse when i was in nong khai. that is a long time ago though. the name sounds super familiar. tell me if they still have the excellent french tamarind coffee which turns your mouth orange and the french bread. (laos influence) i also went to the sculpture park there, thom if you remember my pictures of all the concrete sculptures. is it correct that the guy who built it was a bit on the loonie side? try to get a picture with the skeletons finger in your ear. if you remember i have one of me in 1995 with the skeleton. if my memory serves me correctly this sculpture park is not a temple but just some rich guys idea of weirdness. if you are looking for a good book to read that is set in that area of the world try conrads heart of darkness. apocalypse now was loosely based on this book and the main guy goes up the mehkong river in search of colonel kurtz near the end of the vietnam war (in the movie anyway). another really great travelling book is zen and the art of motorcycle maintainence. dated yet timeless and a great philosophical read.
ReplyDeletewhat is the weather like there now. very hot, very rainy? is it low season or high season?
keep the shiny side up when riding motorcycles and scooters.
cheers, have fun

.....how do you say bacon in thai...jed wants to know
Oh my God!!!! After enjoying a great phone conversation with Michelle this evening (it was early Saturday morning for them)...she told me the wonderful tales of their w/e at the Mut Mee Guesthouse in Nong Khai. She desdribed it as "absolutely beautiful!!!" and said that she had gotten up earlier than Thomas and another Volunthai volunteer named Nicole who is staying with them at this incredible guest house along the Mae Kong River. She described their accomodation as a bamboo hut, very beautiful, tropical, lush with lots of flowers and that she is sitting outdoors, listening to the morning birds and soaking in the the exquisite beauty and the sounds of birds that surround her this morning. She said this guesthouse has a great restaraunt, and shops and opportunities to volunteer. She said they are planning to go to an orphange for HIV positive kids this afternoon and volunteer their time to play with the kids for a few hours. She described having enjoyed a boat trip down the Mae Kong river last night and having had an incredible meal on the river cruise for ONLY $7.00!! Their accomodations cost a mere $10.00/night and between the 3 of them, it is like they are in heaven for just pennies!!! Michelle sounds wonderful and says they are having an incredibly great time both at school and on this w/e excursion. I highly recommned that all of their followers take the time to google the Mut Mee Guesthouse in Nong Kai to see the amazing place they are blessed to be at. I am in awe!!!! Michelle and Thomas....I am sooooo happy for you and the adventures you are having!! This place looks soooooo beautiful!! The cycling trails sound wonderful....are you going to try to expereince them? The Flower Lands sound incredible; the Silk Station looks interesting!...Wat Jan Samakki (temple of the harmonious moon) sounds serene and like a perfect place to pray and offer thanks for your experiences!...I would die to go shopping at the Taa Sadej Market. While there...check out the wooden bowls and buy one for me if they look as great as I think they will be. Michelle....the Village Weaver Handicrafts looks like a perfect place to get some beautiful things while supporting our Thai sisters in their efforts to make a safe living! This might be a great place to think about a gift for Rose Stedman ( and many others)......Did you guys take in the Gaia Bar water cruise? If not...you should go, perform and let them pass aroung the tambourine for you!! And last but not least.....please try the mushroom Laab and the Kao Niao Maa Muong ( mango sticky rice) for me!! it sounds WONDERFUL and I want to hear your description of it!! I am soooo proud of the two of you...thank you for letting us live vicariously through you and your adventures!! This place looks like a place I would be earmarking to return to before leaving the north east. The Volunteering opportunities they have avaialble sound worthy of consideration for another shorter stint of volunteering after your school is out for the summer!!
ReplyDeleteThis has been a long message but I am soooo pumped after our phone conversation & visitng the website! WOW!!! Breathe it in sweetheart, inviting it to always be part of your soul!! I love you!! ~~ Mom ~~
Its bsolutely beautiful to read about their experience through your eyes Betty. Thanks for that post!
ReplyDeleteI took Luke to the RJC Open House last night. Many many people said they were following your blog... Wendy, Laura, Scott, Karisa to name a few... they just aren't posting comments cause they don't have an account. I'll see if Luke can figure one out for anyone to post with....
Love,
Lynne
